Journey to the West -

In the Tang dynesty, Buddhist monk Xuanzang travels to India to bring sacred texts back to his native land. After his attendants and his horse are killed by fiends along the journey, Heaven provides him with new assistants…

Not that a womanizing pig monster, a cannibalistic river demon, a dragon turned into a horse and a chaotic monkey king make the best Buddhist monks… but they do make for a brilliant story ;D

A digital painting, completed SAI and ArtRage. My designs for the characters are mostly based on their descriptions in the novel, although I always loved Sandy/Sha Wujing in this rather fabulous tv series that has him look more like a Japanese kappa, so I went down that route.

I’ve learned a lot doing this, and its actually got me feeling really positive about my ability to learn and grow as an artist. Hooray!

UM EXCUSE ME THOS E ARE FUCKING PIXELS HOW

Seize the Day was a calendar program made by in 1994 by Buena Vista software. It features graphics that at the time, were revolutionary because of the way they handled color cycling. These images were static bitmaps, but by changing color values, they appear animated. What is also impressive about these images is that they had full day night cycles built in, rendered also through color cycling.
A few years ago, a html5 version was made. A copy was uncovered online and there is a way to use the program through DOSbox. As well, one of the original programmers for the project, Iam Gilman, has thought of the idea of remaking it, open sourced, for modern machines.

thanks for writing a more elaborate explanation. i’ve seen these pictures be spread like wildfire without mention of the technology behind it.

Oh, I remember the html5 version from a while back.

Well, my first craft fayre is completed!

Phew! After eduring seven hours of standing around by my table, I can officially say I’ve had my first real life stall.

The event wasn’t as well visited as it could have been, unfortunately, (there was another event going on in the same village on the same day - oops!) and I know from talking to many of the stallholders that some people didn’t sell much if anything, but fortunately my low-price glowing things attracted a lot of the other stallholder’s children, who ensured that I made back the price of the table, at least.

I had fun which was the main thing, and met lots of other interesting crafters. I hope I get chance to do a similar event again someday!

I finally finished my Myst-inspired Byzantine-bound journal, this one had a more intricate carving and I am kicking myself for not using my metallic inks on weirdcitysights' journal, I’ll just have to bring my gold ink with me so I can fill in the design and my signature on her journal as well
The spent a long time thinking of a four-word phrase using the Narayan symbols present (I came up with a lot of test designs and phrases), and I settled for “Survival Growth Spurs Questions” which means something personal to me but I suspect is somewhat cryptic or nonsensical to others. At least it looks lovely

Wow, what a treasure!

Sun Wukong, Great Sage Equal of Heaven! I’m attempting to read the Chinese epic “Journey to the West.” Not sure how far I’ll get - while It’s very readable and interesting, it’s also very LONG.
This was my first traditionally drawn/inked piece in a long time and I was pretty rusty, I wish I’d pushed the pose a lot more and made him look a bit more monkey-like. For any Monkey fans out there, the clothing he’s wearing here is that given to him by the Dragon King of the Eastern Seas - a phoenix feather cap, a golden cuirass, and “cloud walking boots” (No idea what those are, I just gave him snazzy shoes) I think most pictures I’ve seen are him in the outfit he gets later from the Jade Emperor.

I’m done with the sides of the box - Now I want to paint and draw aspens all day long.  I love aspens so much.

I love the way you kept the wood its natural colour and just painted the sky. It makes the most of the wood grain.
